Deploying a Secure Wireless Network in Government Departments Government departments are increasingly pressured to save money, whilst improving front end services. This is particularly true as the recommendations of the Gershon Report look to find efficiency savings of over £6 billion by redirecting funds from the back office to front line services. The answer can be to adopt technical innovations which free up staff time and save money whilst protecting the integrity and security of data.

With this in mind, security consultants at Ensign have designed, deployed and integrated a secure wireless network infrastructure and framework officially accredited to carry restricted information and connect to restricted networks.

This will allow Government offices such as the Home Office, Foreign Office, Cabinet Office, and Ministry of Defence to gain the benefits of a flexible wireless infrastructure without compromising the organisation's security.

The Ensign solution comprises of a number of sites located across the United Kingdom each supporting up to 150 wireless users ranging from small embedded devices based on Microsoft CE to mobile workstations running Microsoft Windows 2000 and XP.

Government organisations have two options: to deploy expensive bespoke encryption equipment or to install more cost effective "off the shelf" products in accordance with a highly secure policy. This policy has been created by the Communications Electronics Security Group (CESG), the information assurance arm of GCHQ based in Cheltenham. Ensign has the expertise to design and integrate both systems in full compliance with the CESG policy.

With Ensign central and local government organisations can now plan to deploy secure wireless network infrastructures safe in the knowledge that the information is secure.
