Wireless Switch Infrastructure

The Wireless Network Design Team at Ensign has perfected a mobility framework for the latest generation wireless LAN architecture i.e. Cisco Airespace, Trapeze, Nortel, Aruba etc. The aim is to permit customers to gain the benefits of the new wireless architecture whilst reducing project risk and minimising capital and operating expenditure, whether the customer is looking to upgrade an existing infrastructure or to deploy a "green field" site.

The framework applies to implementations ranging from a single campus to multiple campuses and remote sites located across the globe. The framework has five key areas (see diagram below).

A wireless controller based infrastructure is fundamentally different in a commercial sense than an autonomous access point system. It is vitally important to accurately specify the system requirements early in the project cycle as an error could have disastrous commercial consequences.

However, there are compelling reasons why organisations are migrating to the controller architecture, and Ensign has developed this framework to aid organisations in deploying this architecture whilst mitigating the associated commercial risk.

  • Wireless switched architecture will become more prevalent as more customers look to reap the benefits of a wireless solution
  • The switched architecture is better suited to multiple apps, data, voice and video, RTLS ad hoc networks - guest access
  • Switched environment provides better management of multiple VLANs
  • Management of multiple sites, changing infrastructure and requirements
  • Management of devices eg security configs
  • Management of RF, potential to manage future protocols and standards eg WiMAX, RFID

With Ensign organisations can now plan to deploy controller based wireless infrastructures from Cisco, Trapeze, Nortel, Aruba etc safe in the knowledge that the risk of escalating capital and operating expenditure can be mitigated.

  • Consultation - Establish strategic goals; identify how wireless infrastructure can help to achieve these goals.
  • Wireless Network Design - wireless infrastructure to achieve these goals in this location
  • Implementation - Staging, configuration and installation of infrastructure
  • Integration - Integrating wireless infrastructure into the wired network whilst ensuring network integrity and security is not compromised
  • Managed Service - Provide device and radio frequency support and monitoring
